What Are The Types Of Chemical Peels Solutions

There are different types of chemical peels to choose from, and asking for advice from a professional is recommended. If you would like to know a few of the options available, we have provided six well-known peel solutions.

We have listed them in alphabetical order for easy reference.

Alpha-hydroxy Acid Peel (AHA)

This kind of peel is the most in-demand since it is the mildest. It is used to lessen moderate skin blemishes and coarse skin to rejuvenate the chest, face, hands, or neck. It also diminishes fine lines and wrinkles and fixes the uneven colour of the skin. AHA solution is applied directly to remove dead skin in several sessions for a successful result.

Glycolic and lactic acid are the most used AHAs, but there are others like citric acid, malic, and tartaric acid. AHA acid peel is best for normal, dry, and sensitive skin.

Beta Hydroxy Acid Peels (BHA)

Beta Hydroxy Acid peels have oil-soluble ingredients that work best with oily skin to control its overproduction. It has anti-inflammatory qualities that ease redness and irritation on acne-prone skin, minimizes enlarged pores, and hydrates sun-damaged skin.

Salicylic acid is the most common BHA in this chemical peel, as used in many acne products. BHA peel also called resurfacing treatment, containing stronger solutions than glycolic acid to reach deeper areas of your skin. It is more potent than AHA but is still relatively mild on the skin. However, if you are sensitive to aspirin, you should not use salicylic acid.

Jessner Peels

These types of peels are usually lactic acid, resorcinol, and salicylic acid solution with ethanol as a base. The resorcinol triggers other acids to go deeper into your skin.

Adding retinoic acid into the peel makes it more effective in healing your skin. Some are used as a natural skin brightener such as phytic acid from rice bran.

These acids differ in strength and ratios. Some are mild to the skin and used to reduce inflammation and redness. Those intended for sensitive skin are chemical peels derived from lactic, mandelic, and phytic acid.

Phenol Peels

Phenol peels, made from carbolic acid, are deep skin peels that solve severe imperfections. They give powerful treatment for deep wrinkles, severe sunburn, and precancerous lumps. They can also provide long-lasting facial rejuvenation for a more youthful look.

Phenol peels need local anaesthesia and pain relief after the procedure. It takes months to fully recover so if your skin is sensitive, it’s not the advisable treatment for you.

Like other skin treatments, you should avoid direct sunlight after the procedure since the new skin is more sensitive to the sun.

Pigment Balancing Peels

Pigment balancing can help improve your skin tone if you have uneven skin complexion, patchy and irregular skin colours, or dark spots. Vitamin C and glycolic acids are applied to lighten skin colour, balance pigmentation, and treat sun-damaged skin.

They supplement the ideal collagen levels and boost cell renewal through anti-inflammatory agents combined with strong exfoliating solutions.
Trichloroacetic Acid Peels (TCA)

This is a medium-deep chemical peel that is often used and has various combinations and strengths. It is administered at a lower ratio with other acids like salicylic acid. It should be applied by a physician to avoid blistering and scarring.

TCA is ideal for pigmentation problems such as brown spots and age spots, sun damage, deep wrinkles, and acne marks. It dries up the top layers of the skin and peels off for a few days, then allows fresh skin to develop.

Now you have read about the different types of peels you should have a better understanding as to which peel will be most suitable for your own skin condition.
